Exceptional women with exceptional roles at Comet Group

There are many exceptional women working at Comet Group who are successful in challenging roles. To mark International Women's Day, we asked four of them what they particularly like about their job and what career advice they give to other women.

What is exceptional about your job?

Design engineers act as an interface between engineers and mechanics. The engineers provide a basic idea, and we plan and implement it. We have insight into all the theoretical possibilities that exist. That fascinates me. Design engineer is considered a male profession and I'm the only girl in my year at Freiburg, but that doesn't bother me.

What do you like most about it?

What I like most is working on new parts, designing them, and thinking about how to do it.

What advice would you give to women who want to go into a similar professional field?

Men are only human. Try to find your place and don't let anyone make you feel insecure. Do what is good for you and don’t try to please everyone. There will always be someone, who is not satisfied. Do your thing and don't let anyone tell you that you can't do it.

What is exceptional about your function?

I am a Service Sales Manager. The job of Service Sales is literally formed by the fusion of service and sales. Not only a technical viewpoint, but also sales skills are required to offer spare parts and especially upgrade services to meet customer needs.

What do you like most about it?

The collaboration with the service team members and the sales team members is the most fascinating for me. I don’t have enough technical skills or knowledge to handle all of the complicated upgrade business by myself, because I’ve been in a sales field and not in an engineering field since I started my career. It is necessary for me to have a close collaboration with experienced engineers to meet customer needs. This makes the job challenging but rewarding. I feel satisfied when we overcome difficulties and achieve our goal together beyond boundaries.

What advice would you give to women who want to go into a similar professional field?

Doing the following things might work for any kind of professional field: Understand your own strengths and weaknesses, communicate closely and collaborate trustfully with others.

What is exceptional about your function?

Computed tomography is a complex field in which many aspects such as scanning methods, hardware and software solutions or image processing methods come together to create the most accurate 3D image of the customer's component in a non-destructive way. What is special about my job is that I do not focus on just one of these sub-areas, but rather start at different points and develop new technologies that help to better solve our customers' problems. From general topics to unique customer solutions, it's all there. As a result, I am in active exchange with many departments in the company and can often take on a mediating role in complex technical issues.

What do you like most about it?

I particularly like how exciting and diverse my job is. I constantly have to get familiar with new topics in order to understand the problem and develop innovative solutions, although the exact way to get there is not predetermined and I am given a lot of freedom in terms of how to do it. I think it's great that in my current job I can pick up on the topics I specialized in during my studies and my doctorate, which I found very fascinating even back then.

What advice would you give to women who want to go into a similar professional field?

If you feel like going in a similar direction professionally, then just go for it and don't let yourself be put off by any gender stereotypes or the like. Don't give up too soon if you encounter tasks that seem unsolvable at first glance, and above all, don't blame your gender if you don't find a solution right away. And don't let anyone (including yourself) tell you that you can't do it.

What is exceptional about your function?

This is my 12th year at Comet. I feel blessed that I could join Comet at a younger age and grow together with this big family. In the past few years, I developed from Sales Representative to Key Account Manager and now to a Regional Sales Manager. Through this journey, I achieved one milestone after another together with the team, which is encouraging.

What do you like most about it?

At Comet we see great opportunities for female employees. Many excellent colleagues around me are women, who are dependable, proactive, hard working and willing to take on challenges. Together we build a very trustful environment, where we can collaborate and contribute.

What advice would you give to women who want to go into a similar professional field?

Being a saleswoman is always full of challenges and surprises. If you ask me for advice: venture outside of your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid of stepping forward and speaking up. Be confident yet humble. Last but not least, being customer-oriented is also key for being successful in sales.
